Why Do We Fall
2017
Why do we Fall? looks to highlight the ‘ungratefulness’ of the skateboarding discipline – the dangers, madness and bravery tied to the sport. The artist Sy Graham references images or clips of skateboard injuries, looking to study the visual agony of the incidences. Here, the artist brings forth the question ‘why do we fall?’, but he doesn’t feel that the logical answer should be, ‘so that we can learn to pick ourselves up’.
Sy Graham imagines how Alfred would say to Bruce Wayne, “Maybe the answer is more complicated than that. Maybe its bad luck; a wrong trajectory, or maybe it’s time to go home with your feet touching the ground”.
To the artist, everyone has dealt with falling at some point, with blood on our face, at the same time, wishing that things could be done differently to avoid the incidences and accidents – to avoid getting wounded and looking weak. However, the fact is, that it is the consequence when someone loses their battle with gravity.

about the artist
Sy Graham aka Sylvain Guibbert (b.1988), is an artist and illustrator whose drawings reflect his keen observations of the people around him. Captured at exact and precise moments, he then relays the expressions and nuances of his subjects onto his artwork. To the artist, these expressions are distinct, and define the uniqueness of an individual that cannot be found in or shared with others.
His muses vary from people on the street to pop culture references, the Internet, as well as visual studies of animals and insects. Executed through different mediums, Sylvain uses ink, pencil, digital illustration and paint to create his artworks. His inspirations take root in science fiction novels, music, movies, nature and his day to day encounters.
