Jalan Pulang
2016
The Ramly burger is representational of ‘street’ lifestyle. It is an iconic Malaysian street food that is highly affordable and easily available almost everywhere during late nights, and so extremely popular amongst youngsters who seek food in the wee hours; in this context, skateboarders.
This sculpture by artist Engku Iman is a Ramly burger made out of skateboards. It represents the intimate connection between the street skaters and the lifestyle that they lead. Just like any street food around the world, it was borne out of local conditions, and bridges multiple activities that happen at the same time. It is a mediator, a stop point or a platform for people who happen to be on the street.

about the artist
Inspired by the conflict in her identity as a young Malay woman in Malaysia Engku Iman sardonically takes on local cultural ironies, paradoxes and colloquialisms. The self-taught illustrator and architecture student currently experiments with carbon tracings on paper, and creates mixed media installations. She recently collaborated with KL skate shop WHEEL LOVE to produce a custom designed skateboard under the Wheel Love Artist Series.
