About
Cannot / be / bo(a)rdered
Frequently perceived as rebellious and ill-behaved, the painted impression of a skateboarder or skater is commonly presented in irate colours of defiance. Skateboarding is no different from other "conventional" disciplines. It is a form of personal expression, as well as a creative outlet - one that allows an acute balance of visceral and artistic rabble-rousing. Over the years, skate culture has developed into a distinct language and visual identity, quintessential to contemporary youth today.
Taken off the Urban Dictionary, the term 'cant be bothered' is a phase that typecasts a skater's character - disinterested in other matters apart from his/her own. The title Cannot Be Bo(a)rdered, subverts the expression by suggesting that the board(er) exists outside this subculture. The exhibition shares with audiences the influences that echo beyond the peripheries of the skate culture.
Cannot be Bo(a)rdered is a broad visual exploration of skate culture and its psyche, examining different art forms through different creative styles, imagery and visual expressions. At the same time, the exhibition showcases a blend of co-existing subcultures that are increasingly popular today - urban, street, DIY and visual cultures. Artists from different countries will use skateboards as the primary medium to create or be inspired from; responding to the physical material, and challenging the undesirable social typecasts by reconstructing a new narrative.
